HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Oklahoma State women's golf team completed the opening 18 holes of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in 15th place, but still within striking distance of the lead pack at Long Cove Golf Club.
The Cowgirls carded a 17-over 301 in the opening round, which is only 19 strokes off hosts South Carolina, which currently leads the field at 2-under 282. Only 11 strokes separate OSU from moving into the top five. Florida State's Frida Kinhult is atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under 68.
The event is named in honor of music star Darius Rucker, who is also a South Carolina alum. Players and coaches were treated to a concert from Rucker, who formerly fronted Hootie & The Blowfish before taking on a solo career.
Cowgirl freshman Sara Camarena led OSU with a 3-over 74 and is tied for 39th place. Chi-Min Chen and Han-Hsuan Yu followed Camarena with 4-over 75 on the day and tied for 44th place. At 6-over 77, Lianna Bailey and Michelle Forsland both tied for 67th place.
The Cowgirls will tee off tomorrow's second round at 8:20 a.m. CT. Fans can follow the action at golfstat.com.
